Elementary school students’ day and week in Japan

Students arrive at school before 8:30(Every school has its own time schedule)

Before going to school, students get together near the home and go to school in groups. Going to school in groups is called “shudan-toukou”.

Before 1st period, “Asa-no-kai”, which means morning homeroom, is held.

At that time, students hand in homework and the teacher makes announcements.

Before noon, there are 4 periods with 10-minute breaks in between. Between 2nd and 3rd period, there is a 20-minute interval.

Between morning classes and afternoon classes is school lunch. After lunch is a little longer interval, about 30 minutes. After that, students clean classrooms and corridors together. Fifth period is in the afternoon. Just after ceremonies such as entrance ceremony and so on, there are no afternoon classes.

After all periods, “Kaeri-no-kai”, afternoon homeroom, is held. At that time, the teacher announces homework and other notices. Students walk home in groups.

Most schools have classes from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, Sunday and national holidays, there are no classes.
